One of the strokes of genius with the Mk2 was to fit Jaguar's biggest engine at the time, the 3.8-litre XK six. This 3781cc straight-six produced 220bhp and a 3.8 with the manual gearbox was a true 125mph machine, putting most sports cars to shame as the 1960s dawned.

Jaguar Xk Mk2 How Car Specs

The Jaguar Mark 2 first appeared at the end of 1959, with sales really commencing in 1960. Although a fairly small car compared to the Jaguar Mk IX, it still fully fitted in with the Jaguar motto: "Grace, Space, Pace". A direct replacement for the Jaguar 2.4 and 3.4 litre models which have retrospectively been dubbed "Mark 1" cars, the Jaguar.

The Mk2 was finally killed off by late 1967, although two re-branded versions - the Jaguar 240 and 340 - were then launched. The 240/340 interior was downgraded via the use of vinyl upholstery and poorer quality carpets in order to keep list prices as low as possible, but in every other respect this latest duo was a fitting continuation of the Mk2.

The 2.4 was still less fast than it looked, despite an additional 8bhp over the Mk1, but was a usefully-priced entry-level model. For the Mk2, the previously top-of-the range 3.4-litre car was now occupying the mid-range slot. Its XK engine had been enough to top the compact saloon range, but that changed with the arrival of the Mk2.

The all synchromesh gearbox was fitted to the Mk2 range from September 1965. (Original Mk I and Mk II by Nigel Thorley) Although I drove my MK2 for many years with this engine and gearbox combination, and on a number of long trips, it's a fact that the 2.4 doesn't have the same oomph as its larger engined siblings — the 3.4 and 3.8-litre Mk2s.

The Jaguar XK engine found in every Mk2 requires regular maintenance to stay at its best - and rebuilding one in need of intensive work can be an expensive proposition. A well caredfor XK can reach high mileages, but regular 3000-mile (or six-monthly) oil changes are important if you want your engine to lead a long and healthy life..

Before you rush off and buy an engine and gearbox, measure up the dimensions of the Daimler V8 and gearbox combination very carefully, because the body pressings which cover the bellhousing and gearbox are much smaller in the Daimler V8, than the Jaguar equivalent car (Mark 2 or 240/340) So if you want to fit a Jaguar XK six cylinder engine you will need to cut away the existing metal and weld.

XK engines and unleaded fuel. E-Type. Heuer (David Jones) October 4, 2019, 5:25pm 1. Someone raised this topic on the UK Forum and I am surprised by the (historical) Jaguar response when asked about using unleaded fuel: I have checked all the Service and Parts Bulletins but there is no mention of a change to valve seat material.
